My government conversation

Conversation about our government

Ellen: How does your government work?

Jordan: Well because we're a democratic country, after three years, if you are a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, and you are eighteen years old or over, you need to enroll to vote for a party to be in government.

Ellen: Who runs your government?

Jordan: There are two main people in charge, the governor general and the prime minister. The Queen doesn't really have any power because the governor general takes it all.

Ellen: So how do you get to be a candidate?

Jordan: Well any citizen who is enrolled as an elector is allowed to be a candidate.

Ellen: What sort of a system do you have?

Jordan: We have a system called mixed member proportional system, or MMP short.

Ellen: what is cabinet?

Jordan: Cabinet is sort of like a kitchen cabinet but all the tins are government.
